That’s right, we need another bill because there are not yet enough laws in the universe to stop everything that is annoying to each of us.
In order to keep airline prices “down” in the face of fuel price increases, they decided to start charging for bags. Because of that, people try to carry on everything. Now, you want to be the first onboard or you don’t get a spot for your bag on board. How annoying is that?
Let’s make a new law!!!
We really don’t have enough yet.
Passengers also were annoyed by fellow travelers who try to carry on everything they have, with more than two-thirds telling the U.S. Travel Association in a survey that they were peeved with “people who bring too many carry-on bags through the security checkpoint.”

Well, MY peeve is people telling me something is not possible because there’s some rule proscribing against it. I wouldn’t put it on a survey about flying because the problem is bigger than flying. I’ve been ticked off about it since third grade or so when I got the “If I make one exception, I’ll have to make a thousand” speech from the matronly troll with the thick reading glasses in the admin office at my school. No, I can’t even start to remember what my request was. It doesn’t matter.
Point is, I’m not the only one. And the “rule for every headache” thing does not get rid of headaches. What it gets rid of, is life. It leads to a bunch of things not happening, and a bunch of allegedly customer-service types peeling off excuses, pointing to some nebulous rule that may or may not be in effect. It breeds distrust among humans, since I have no way of determining if there really is such a rule, or if the bozo just wants to sit back and watch the planet spin until its time for a crossword puzzle break.
I know I’m preaching to the choir. This way of thinking just cheeses me off.
Am happy with your preaching, as I really hadn’t gotten around to thinking about not being able to really know if there even IS such a rule thought.
This is very true. I’ve actually had to speak to employees before about not taking that easy route and saying “it’s the rule” and instead, explaining to people the reasons why we are wanting what we want to see.
It definitely cheeses me off.
What cheeses me off is this:
Passengers also were annoyed by fellow travelers who try to carry on everything they have, with more than two-thirds telling the U.S. Travel Association in a survey that they were peeved with “people who bring too many carry-on bags through the security checkpoint.
Count me among the passengers annoyed by fellow travelers who try (AND SUCCEED) in carrying everything they have on board.
I’m not for prohibiting airlines from charging checked-bag fees (it costs airlines more to have all of those baggage handlers) but I am TOTALLY for a TSA fee for carry-on baggage.
Yeah, I hear ya. Seems to me it’s a problem with lack of coordination, and inexperience. You can easily pick out the frequent fliers, they know exactly what they’re going to be needing in-flight. Kindle. Water bottles. Well I suppose nowadays, the water bottle is a thing of the past…
Point is, inexperienced carrying-on is no different from inexperienced packing. Nobody stops to say “Wait, the flight is this long…in all likelihood, I will snooze from here to here…what am I really going to need?”
Carry-on luggage is like, practically, nothing. From what I recall of my business trips, the offenders were likely to have children. I do have some sympathy for this, but c’mon. Kid wants this-or-that toy, tell him the toy didn’t make the cut, we had to prioritize, it’s part of traveling. It’s good for him.
Thinking about this some more…
It seems, from what I recall, like from the beginning of time the ritual instruction by the luggage check counter was “You are allowed ONE carry-on.” I’ve never really put that much thought into why the drama has ensued and persisted but…see my comments above…why, exactly is one not plenty? Book. Medication. Laptop to get work done. Spare battery. Blanket, since you don’t like the plane’s blanket. Pillow. Second book. We haven’t filled up one luggage item yet…
