Back to Honduras

Just to keep you updated, Zelaya is still in the Brazilian embassy. Many of his “supporters” have gone home.

Aria, the Costa Rican President who previously negotiated a plan for Zelayas’ return by deciding unilaterally that Zelaya could return if he promised to be good and that Micheletti should step aside based on this promise, has suggested that negotiations should be re-started.”

“I think it is much more civilised if we re-start the negotiations… So I have invited both the foreign minister of the de facto government and the Zelaya people to re-initiate this dialogue in my country,” he said.

What the hell for?

Zelaya is suggesting that he’s in big danger due to the helicopters and the police waiting outside the embassy to arrest him should he step out. Look at me – I’m in danger!! Yet – “I’m ready to lead now”.
Does this make sense?

Micheletti however has allowed the Red Cross to give them food/supplies as needed and says that Zelaya can stay there for the next 10 years as far as he’s concerned.

[Michletti] “We will respect international and national law. If [Zelaya] wants to stay there for five or 10 years, we don’t have any problem with him living there,” he said.

But he added that he wanted Brazil “to understand that they should give him political asylum [in Brazil] or turn him over to Honduran authorities to be tried”.

Martha Lorena Alvarado, a senior government aide, said the interim government said it has “not considered, nor will there be, a raid on the embassy to capture Mr Manuel Zelaya”.

In the meantime Brazil is threatening that Micheletti “better not” raid their embassy.

Bottom line:

He [Zelaya] said Tuesday that he had no plans to leave the embassy and he repeatedly asked to speak with interim President Roberto Micheletti.
Later in the day, Lopez, the foreign minister, quoted Micheletti as saying that “I will talk to anybody, anywhere, any time, including ex-president Manuel Zelaya.” But Lopez said the offer did not include allowing Zelaya to serve out his presidential term or avoid arrest on a Supreme Court warrant charging the ex-leader with treason and abuse of authority.

You are an impressive man President Micheletti.
